"ISIS/ISIL continues to demonstrate its full understanding of IED/UXO Clearance procedures by placing booby-traps in unexpected places and catching the unwary EOD/IED Clearance Operators. In this scenario: Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) was advancing toward a known Islamic State position and took numerous casualties during the advance due to IEDs. In Oct 2017 two SDF personnel were killed after an anti-lift switch functioned when they attempted to pick up an ISIS impacted gas canister mortar. These individuals were routinely recovering UXO in liberated areas of Ar Raqqa. During the post accident investigation, the components recovered from the accident site revealed that the SDF had caused the booby trap to function by picking up an item of ISIS Impacted UXO, causing the main charge concealed underneath the UXO to detonate. Initiation was by a pressure release, anti-lift switch with a delay to arming capability."
